NJHS

National Junior Honor Society

The National Junior Honor Society chapter of San Juan Del Rio is a duly chartered and affiliated chapter of this prestigious national organization. Membership is open to those students who meet the required standards in five areas of evaluation:

scholarship,    leadership,    service,    citizenship,     and character.

Standards for selection are established by the national office of NJHS and have been revised to meet our local chapter needs. Students are selected to be members by a 5-member Faculty Council, appointed by the principal, which bestows this honor upon qualified students on behalf of the faculty of our school each year during CatholicSchool’s Week.

Students become eligible for membership in the second semester of seventh grade.  For the scholarship criterion, a student must have a cumulative GPA of 90% or better beginning first quarter of the sixth grade year.  Applications are available to students in the fall each year.  Students must give evidence of a history of leadership experiences, and participation in school, church, or community service is required.  Specifically, a minimum of 10 hours of documented service is required from two of the three categories: school, church, and community.  Applicants must also give evidence of exceptional character through conduct at school and by letters of recommendation.

Once inducted, new members are required to maintain the same level of performance or better in all five criteria that led to their selection.  This obligation includes regular attendance at chapter meetings held monthly during the school year, and participation in the chapter service projects(s).
